ireland rocks


Though depictions of many things Irish still tend to favor stereotypes (leprechauns, shamrocks and green beer on St. Patrick's Day), Ireland's older musical cliches have been overtaken since the '60s by a diverse array of styles. Here's a gallery of Irish musicians who've made waves beyond the Emerald Isle.
U2: The modern fathers of Irish rock, U2 has always included politics, including those of their native land, in a career spanning more than three decades. Charismatic frontman Bono and guitarist The Edge meanwhile are testing their luck with their first Broadway venture, the songs for the $65 million "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," now going through further production tweaks following the dismissal of director Julie Taymor.
